About

Founder

Abarna holds a Bachelor’s in Engineering and a Master’s in Human Resource Management. In the beginning of her career, she worked as a lecturer in various Engineering colleges for 3 years. After her Master’s, she worked with the Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd., now Randstad India, Chennai, playing several roles, the last of which was Asst. Manager in Human Resource. She has also worked as an Administrator and Human Resource Manager in an alternative school in Coimbatore.

Her desire to understand and work on her own led her to the path of Transactional Analysis. Currently, she is part of a Transactional Analysis Education group facilitated by a trainer from South Africa. Her search for a wholesome educational philosophy found its home in the Waldorf methodology. She regularly takes part in training on Waldorf philosophy and her 4-year training program is nearing completion.

Abarna loves to work with adults and children to help them overcome their challenges and process their life paths and milestones. She is a certified counselor and is training in the anthroposophical wing of Waldorf, particularly in rhythmical massages and movement therapy, as a means to guide people on their healing journeys.
Abarna is a native of Tiruppur. Her grandfather established a thriving timber business in the city from scratch and she still hears from people – familiar and new – about his determination and good character. She hence believes that a greater force and grace has led her to start the school in the city.

Director

Maruthi Vikraman has over 15 years of work experience in the service industry, including hospitality, media, entertainment, and automobile. Equipped with his wide range of work experience, he leads the finance, marketing, and infrastructure aspects of the school. He is an alumni of Loyola College, Chennai and has been part of the leadership team of an acclaimed matriculation school near Kangeyam, Tamil Nadu, which was helmed by his father for over 30 years. Vikraman holds the space and energy for the founder’s vision to take shape into the grounded yet ever evolving physical manifestation of Lokhaa in service of children.

“You have no idea how unimportant is all that the teacher says or does not say on the surface, and how important what he himself is as teacher.”

– Rudolf Steiner

Our teachers are our torchbearers and pillars, bearing the vision of a wholesome and soul-nurturing education in their hearts, clarity of purpose in their minds, and the tender, trusting, and endlessly talented children of Lokhaa in their hands. They make possible the kind of education that invokes the natural yearn in each child to learn about the world and to live a purposeful life which in turn culminates in academic excellence and extraordinary knowledge rooted in observation, discernment, and understanding.

We believe that what a teacher holds within themselves is as crucial, if not more, as their worldly and subject matter expertise. For this calling of nurturing children as a service to humanity, Lokhaa has brought together a vibrant, bold, passionate, independent-minded, evolved, and open-hearted group of teachers, ranging from ex-corporate employees to artists, social workers, and experienced teachers.

In the kindergarten years, the teacher is seen by the child as an extension of their mother. The kindergarten teacher has an extreme passion and love for children, loves to care for them, and is endlessly patient and soft to the demands and needs of children. During this stage of their development (0-7 years), children learn and live by imitating the adults they love in their lives. The teacher hence strives to be gentle, rooted in the present moment, and graceful in all that they do – the way their hands work, the way they sing and move, the way they speak, and the way they just be – so that they are worthy of absolute imitation.

Teachers thus hold a sacred place in Lokhaa.

In the grade years, children step more firmly into the physical world and during these years (7-14 years), their faculty for feeling develops and their learning happens in alignment with the doings of the teacher. Children look up to the teacher for all that they bring into the classroom and behold the teacher in awe for their knowing about the world more than they do and for being skilled at their work. The grade teacher hence strives to inculcate beauty and truth in all that they do – be it the drawing or writing they do on the blackboard, the way they do their handwork, play their recorder, talk to the children, carry themselves, present themselves, and the way they just be – so that the feeling life of children is deeply nurtured. Children also want to be guided and held as they explore their feelings. The loving authority of the teacher connects to each child in the class, holds the class together, understands where each child comes from, and how the child processes and takes in the knowledge imparted in class and the world around them.

In the middle and high school years (14-21 years), the judgment faculty of children develops and hence, they look for the expertise of the teacher in the subject they handle. They also seek connection to the teacher in a deeper and more mature way. The teacher in these grades therefore is proficient in their area and acts as a guide to children in helping them explore their subjects and the world. They also open up the space and invite children to have conversations that matter to them, thus holding them as they build their character and personality and seek a fulfilling purpose to pursue.
